Filipino Chess Players League Reached Another Milestone

By Emman

The Filipino Chess Players League (FCPL) has reached another milestone in the history of Filipino chess in Dubai. With the launching of its new website, fcplworld.com, Filipino chess players around the globe will now be kept abreast of various Filipino chess activities with important news and issues right at their fingertips.

The historic launching was held on Friday, 28 April 2006 at the Consulate Office of the Philippines in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was warmly welcomed by Consul General Antonio Curameng who officially launched the website and was widely received by FCPL officers, members and various Filipino chess fans in Dubai and the Middle East region.

Among the guests who attended the launching ceremony, apart from the 50 attendees from all over UAE, were Philippine Labour Attache Vicente Cabe, Mr. Casto Abundo, Chief Arbiter of FIDE, and Wesley So, the youngest member of the Filipino chess squad for the 2006 Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy.

The aim of the website is essentially centered on communication which supports FCPL's ambition of becoming a global Filipino chess club. “… communication plays a vital role in the rapid development and progress of FCPL chess members and players around the globe…making it available online would help us achieve our ultimate goal in becoming the primary Filipino global chess club”, Mr. Joey Tiberio, the external vice president and the man who engineered the creation of the website, said after his brief introduction of the different sections of the website.

Mr. Tiberio added that fcplworld.com was highly supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), World Chess Federation (FIDE), Arab Chess Federation, UAE Chess Federation, Dubai Chess Club, Philippine Embassy, Philippine Consulate and the Filipino chess community.

Mr. Augusto Marcial, FCPL president, stated in his closing remarks "definitely, we will witness many more great things and anticipate a lot of progress from this year and in years ahead … this [the website] is just a beginning…" which generated a big round of applause in the hall and inspired a great number of aspiring Filipino chess masters. He also expressed gratitude to the Honorable Consul General Antonio Curameng for his full support to FCPL club and to the officers and members who have made their unique contribution in the realization of this website.

Coinciding with the launching ceremony was the annual officer’s oath taking of the newly elected FCPL officers which was followed by a lunch sponsored by Consul General Antonio Curameng.

The officers of the Filipino Chess Players League for the year 2006 are as follows:
