FCPL RAK Chapter 2nd Rapid Chess Championship

Mr. Muammar Al Muhairi, representative of His Highness Sheikh Salem Bin Sultan Al Qassimi and Mr. Darwish Hassouneh, the General Manager of Super Bowling, were among the sponsors and guests of honour of the recently held FCPL rapid chess tournament in the Super Bowling hall in Ras Al-Khaimah on Friday, 23 June 2006.

With a total of 18 participants from the Emirates of Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al-Khaimah, the tournament was organised by the Filipino Chess Players League (FCPL) spearheaded by FCPL-Ras Al-Khaimah chairman, Mr. Lino Fabrigas, with assistance from Ms. Maria Fajardo who arranged the venue and prizes for this event.

The tournament was scheduled under the 7 round Swiss System regulation with 15 minutes on the clock allocated to each player.

Onin Payoket, who became the eventual champion, dominated the field of participants in the early rounds of the tournament. With his impressive 5 consecutive wins, Onin Payoket continued to display his brilliant skills on the board by taking on Michael Diagbil and Allan Salac on a decisive draw in the 6th and 7th rounds respectively to capture the 1st place with a high score of 6.0 points.

Axel John Valerio, a sensation 12 years old player from Sharjah, won the 2nd place by crushing Mel Cabangon with black pieces in the final round with a score of 5.5 points and Michael Diagbil of FCPL-Dubai took the 3rd place by beating Rolly Viente in the final round with 5 points.

The top three winners received a trophy and cash whilst the participants finishing 4th to 10th each received a medal awarded by Mr. Al Muhairi and Mr. Darwish in the closing ceremony.

Showdown in Reef Mall

Danny Baltazar has added another feather in his cap following his triumph in the Filipino Chess Players League (FCPL) monthly rapid chess tournament on Friday, 26 May 2006, in Reef Mall, Dubai.

Started off at a snail's pace with a shocking draw from Fred Lopes in the first round, Danny Baltazar made a spectacular comeback winning the next six rounds of the 7-round Swiss System event.

In the first pace of the tournament, Florante Lopes dominated the standing with 4 straight wins and asssddf (Left to right: Abdullah, Danny, Arnel & Mel)sffasdf it was only in the fifth round that he was stopped by Dave Ravara.

After round 5, Dave Ravara together with Danny Baltazar, who crushed Tony Molina in the fifth round, shared a half point lead over Florante Lopes and Mar Alfonso. When the joint leaders faced each other in the following round, Danny Baltazar managed to pull away to score a decisive full point win over Dave Ravara which created a momentum for a needed rally going into the final round. This victory placed Danny Baltazar in a comfortable position for a top spot if he can pull it off in the final round.

On the lower boards after round five, Florante Lopes who tried to regain his top post, shared with Mar Alfonso tracked the leaders of the field with 4.0 points each, whilst Francis Aldeguer, Abdullah Tato, Emman Marbella and Michael Diagbil scored 3.5 points. Tony Marbella, Tony Molina, Moshe Molina and Rolly Viente also scored 3.0 points.

In the exciting final showdown, Danny Baltazar continued his decisive winning streak and preserved his grip of the top spot by crushing Florante Lopes, with an impressive score of 6.5 points. Whilst Abdulla Tato fell further back by losing to Dave Ravara, who captured second place with a high score of 5.5 points in board 2, Francis Aldequer grabbed the third place after beating Tony Marbella with 5.5 points in board 3. Although tied for second with Dave Ravara, Francis Aldeguer lost in a tie-break.

FCPL Junior Rapid Chess Championship 2006


Congratulations to Axel John Valerio for a stunning victory in the recently held FCPL Junior Rapid Chess Championship on June 2, 2006 in Al Fardan Centre, Sharjah, hosted by the FCPL-Sharjah Chapter.

Under a 7-round Swiss system regulation, Axel John Valerio garnered an impressive perfect score of 7.0 points.

1st Runner Up: Ronald Ducalang (6.0 points)
2nd Runner Up: Ralph Mancao (4.0 points)

Whilst the Philippine women's team regained confidence and momentum after their lowly 40th standing in the first half of the 13 round Swiss system Olympiad, and finished 26th place in their overall standing with 22 points, the Philippine men's team continued to plummet and finished 44th place with a score of 28.5 points.
